IMPD handles 15 shootings since Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Fifteen people were shot, five of them died in Indianapolis since Saturday.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department handled all of the shootings and had reported it had made two arrests by midday Tuesday.

The violent weekend in Indianapolis brought the murder count up to 58 for the year. This time last year, there were 47. Last year’s homicide rate was the highest ever for the city.

There were two deadly shootings on Saturday. One was on the 2000 block of Boulder Drive, which is southwest of West 79th Street and Boulder Drive, at the Landmark Apartments & Townhomes. The other happened in the 8000 block of Shibler Drive, near 30th Street and Franklin Road.

On Sunday, a Dollar General clerk was killed at the store at 5450 Emerson Way.

On Monday, an 18-year-old man was shot and killed at Crown Liquor store at East 21st Street and North Post Road.

Finally, on Tuesday, a suspect shot and killed a worker at Shell gas station at East 34th Street and North Sherman Drive.

For people in the community, the loss of lives isn’t just another statistics, it is a loss for their communities.

Raybob’s auto repair sits across Sherman Drive from the Shell station. It is a small business with a big community impact. “I came to serve. You serve your people, take care of your customers,” said Mo Williams, who has worked at Raybob’s for the past nine years.

He said he has gotten to know the neighborhood and its residents, including 50-year old Sheriff Jallow, the Shell gas station worker killed Tuesday.

“The guy is a good friend of mine. All the years, he’s ‘Mo, Mo, Mo.’ He come past here blowing (his horn) and everything,” Williams said.

But, Mo won’t hear that friendly honk anymore after he heard sirens as police rushed to the scene just after 5 a.m. Tuesday.

“That really broke my heart because he’s like a family member to the community. Plus, he’s a good friend of mine,” Williams said.

The heartbreak does not end there.

At the Dollar Store, 41-year-old clerk Brian Eure was shot and killed as he worked Sunday.

“This man took my husband away, their father for no reason,” said his wife, Jolane Eure. “I want this man caught. I’m asking the community to, please … for your help in catching this man and get him in jail so we can have closure.”

Closure, justice, it’s a sentiment shared by too many.

Back at Raybob’s, it was not business as usual Tuesday. But, Mo said he will continue to be a presence in his community.

“You’re supposed to make sure the customer is satisfied with your service at all times,” Williams said.

Police are asking for help. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS.
