Indiana State Police arrest man wanted for North Carolina murder

FERDINAND, Ind. (WISH) — A man wanted for a murder in Asheville, North Carolina, was arrested Saturday in southern Indiana, Indiana State Police say.

Police say the suspect, Arturo Martinez-Cordero, 45, of North Carolina, drove from Asheville after a Saturday afternoon homicide.

On Saturday, Asheville police notified Indiana State Police that Martinez-Cordero was travelling west on I-64. Indiana troopers initiated a traffic stop on I-64 about 3 miles west of the State Road 162 exit for Santa Claus, Ferdinand and Jasper.

“Troopers also believed Arturo Martinez-Cordero was operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and possessing cocaine,” said a news release issued Sunday afternoon from the Indiana State Police post in Jasper.

He was taken into custody without incident, the release said.

Martinez-Cordero was being held Monday at the DuBois County Security Center in Japser on Indiana charges of possession of cocaine, operating while intoxicated, and operating a motor vehicle without receiving a license. In North Carolina, he will face a charge of first-degree murder.

The town of Ferdinand is about an hour’s drive northeast of Evansville.

Indiana agencies involved in the arrest included the Spencer County Sheriff’s Office, Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ferdinand Police Department.

Corrections were made to this story since its initial posting.
