INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A clerks’ error led to the release of a Minnesota murder suspect Wednesday in Marion County, and police are seeking the public’s help in locating him, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

Kevin Mason, 28, of St. Paul, was wanted on three Minnesota warrants, including one for murder in connection with a 2021 shooting in Minneapolis, a second for violating parole, and a third for possessing a firearm.

News media reports that Mason was charged with second-degree murder in a fatal shooting outside the Shiloh Temple on June 11, 2021. Police believe Mason shot 29-year-old Dontevius Ahmad Catchings following a funeral that was attended by members of a known street gang.

Mason was arrested in Indianapolis on Sept. 11 and was being held at the Adult Detention Center when he was mistakenly released. Police say authorities in Minnesota waived extradition on one of the issued warrants.

The sheriff’s office said the waived extradition may have contributed to his release. The two warrants were closed in error as duplicates.

Marion County sheriff’s Col. James Martin said during a press conference on Tuesday, one of their inmate records clerks on Sept. 12 thought she was correcting duplicate bookings for Mason when she removed two of the holds, leaving one.

On the following day, a clerk from Ramsey County in Minnesota removed the last hold that was booked for Mason. The Ramsey County clerk and two other clerks — it was not specified what county the two other clerks were from — were in charge of reviewing the record information and did not catch the mistake that happened the day before.

So far in the investigation, two inmate records clerks involved in the mistake, including the one from Marion County, were terminated Friday.

“This was an error. This should not have happened. Mason should not have been released from our custody. This was discovered shortly after his release,” Martin said.

Mason was described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall and 205 pounds with a cross tattoo under his right eye and “SUB” tattooed on his chest. He also has a neck tattoo.

Anyone who sees Mason should call 911 immediately and not approach him.
