Driver crashes into Indy Hostel bathroom, injures guest

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man driving a borrowed car crashed into a north side home used as an inn, injuring a guest in the bathroom and causing $30,000 in damage Sunday morning.

The 22-year-old driver was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed on Winthrop Avenue around 1:15 a.m. when he blew through a stop sign and the borrowed car, a Dodge Charger, slammed into Indy Hostel, 4903 Winthrop Ave., according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

Dale Hamnes, 55, was in the bathroom when the crash happened and suffered bruising and hip pain, he told News 8.

“I was on the toilet and I hear this big crash. At first I thought somebody had taken a baseball bat and was knocking out the windows. And the impact actually knocked me off the toilet and out of the bathroom. It’s one of the wildest things I’ve ever been through,” Hamnes said.

Hamnes was treated at IU Methodist Hospital and released, he said.

The driver was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and was in the custody of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, according to IFD.

News 8 has reached out to IMPD for the driver’s name and the charges he may face.
