Daybreak Drive-IN: Two new police shootings… Speaker vote set for noon… NFL admits an ‘oops’

• A man is dead in Randolph County after an exchange of gunfire with deputies. It happened in New Pittsburgh, northwest of Union City. State police say deputies went to a call of a possible overdose. The search led to a man walking on the street. The deputies say he pulled a gun and fired at them – and they fired back, killing him. Brayden Barnhouse was 19.
• A shooting by police in Indianapolis early Tuesday morning critically wounded a man. It happened on the near north side – officers say they heard gunshots and tried to pull over a car that sped away. They later found the car crashed into a building – and spotted the driver in a tree. Officers say he refused to come down, asked them to kill him, and threatened to reach for a gun. One officer fired, hitting him. Investigators say they have not been able to find a gun.
• The U.S. House is set for a speaker vote at noon today. House Republicans picked two new nominees Tuesday – first, Tom Emmer, who lasted 4 hours as the pick before withdrawing in the face of criticism from former President Donald Trump. Then, at day’s end, Louisiana’s Mike Johnson got enough votes for the nod, but it’s not clear if he has secured enough to get the gavel in the full vote today.
• The man best known as ‘Shaft’ has died. Richard Roundtree played the smooth private detective in a series of hit films. His fifty-year career went on to include a wide range of roles in TV and film. His manager says Roundtree had pancreatic cancer. He was 81.
• The Pacers tip off the regular season tonight – at home against the Wizards. Next game is Saturday, on the road against the Cavaliers… then back home Monday, hosting the Bulls.
• Colts owner Jim Irsay has his reporter hat on- delivering two new headlines from the team. In one social media post, he reveals that quarterback Anthony Richardson had surgery Tuesday. Irsay says it was a success – with no surprises. Irsay then says the NFL now admits that officials made incorrect calls at the end of Sunday’s loss to the Browns. He does not give specifics, but two disputed calls proved pivotal on the Browns’ final series.
• Mostly cloudy and breezy throughout the day – but warm again, too – highs in the mid-70s.
