18-year-old robber dies, was 1 of 2 males found shot in street

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An 18-year-old who was one of two males found shot in a street Thursday night has died, the Marion County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

Deayris Perkins died of multiple gunshot wounds, the coroner said, but his death is not being considered a criminal homicide because Perkins was trying to rob the other male, Officer Genae Cook said Monday night. The other male, who has not been identified, will not be charged because he was firing his gun in self-defense, she said.

Police said Thursday that two males younger than 25 had been found shot and were in critical condition.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was called to reported “shots fired” about 9:50 p.m. Thursday in the 3800 block of East 31st Street. The call was upgraded to a “person shot” when a person was observed laying in the street and people with guns were nearby, police said Thursday.

IMPD Capt. Michael Elder said Thursday that one of the males, who was Perkins, was in “extremely critical condition” at IU Health Methodist Hospital. His injuries were so severe he could not talk with investigators before going to the hospital. The other male, who was being robbed, was in critical condition at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, Elder said Thursday. One male was shot inside a black sport-utility vehicle, Elder said, and the other male was shot outside the SUV.

Police do not provide information on changes in medical condition unless a person dies.
