Showers and storms move in Saturday
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A wet, stormy start to the weekend, and temperatures will boost to the 60s for many this weekend.
Friday night:
Cloud cover continues for the rest of the evening. A well-advertised weekend storm system will make its approach to the Midwest overnight. Expect showers to slide into the southern portions of the state after midnight, with steady rain arriving to the metro before daybreak. A few rumbles of thunder will be possible for the early morning hours as well.
Temperatures will hold steady through the overnight hours leading into daybreak Saturday.
Saturday:
Steady showers with a few isolated thunderstorms continue for the entire morning. By early afternoon, the steady rain shield will have moved north of the area. Some breaks in the cloud cover could lead to a recharge in the atmosphere, leading to a few strong afternoon storms. The more likely scenario will be mostly cloudy to overcast conditions, leaving us with a minimal (but not zero) severe weather risk.
A marginal risk for severe storms is in place for areas west and southwest of Indianapolis. All modes over severe weather is in play, with damaging straight line winds the primary concern.
There will be some concern for minor flooding as well. Heavy rain could lead to some areas picking up over 1″ of rain through the morning hours of Saturday.
Meanwhile, this wound-up system will spin out some decently strong winds. Gusts could reach as high as 40 mph at any point during the day. Some of the isolated storms could spin up even higher gusts.
Temperatures will be considerably warmer than average, hitting the lower 60s across much of central Indiana.
Sunday:
Rain will have wrapped up well before daybreak. Gusty winds ahead of a cold front will be the main story as we wrap up the weekend, with gusts exceeding 30 mph at times. Highs top out in the lower to middle 50s.
8 day forecast:
Much colder temperatures move into the area starting Sunday night following the cold front. Highs will be close to normal, reaching the lower 40s on Monday. 30s on tap with dry weather for the rest of the work week.
