INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man helping a stranded driver push their car off the highway was hit and killed by a passing vehicle, Indiana State Police say.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the man who died as 22-year-old Justin Dobbins.

Investigators say it happened at around 11:51 p.m. Tuesday night. Dobbins responded to a call for help from a stranded motorist. The person’s vehicle broke down on the I-70 westbound ramp onto Sam Jones Expressway.

While Dobbins tried to help the person push their vehicle onto the shoulder, another vehicle came by and hit the vehicle, striking and killing Dobbins, as well.

Medics pronounced Dobbins dead at the scene.

According to investigators, the other driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with troopers. Police say they do not believe drugs and alcohol were factors in the crash.

The ramp was closed for about three hours for investigation but reopened around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
