Indianapolis Moms: Tackling decision fatigue

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — When you think of ‘decision fatigue’ it’s hard to place what it is but it’s actually one of the most common conditions that adults struggle with. Andee Bookmyer with Indianapolis Mom’s stopped by WISH TV Daybreak to chat with News 8’s Jeremy Jenkins about it.

Nearly that nearly one-third of adults struggle with basic decisions such as what to eat or wear. The constant need to make choices can lead to procrastination or avoidance, as brains seek respite from the relentless demand.

Fortunately, there are strategies to manage and mitigate decision fatigue:

Remove Unnecessary Pressure: Keeping decisions in perspective can help clear the mind and reduce stress, enabling more rational decision-making. Reminding oneself that most choices are not as critical as they seem is a helpful strategy.

Make a Solid Plan: Allocating dedicated time to think and plan for significant decisions can reduce procrastination and approach choices with confidence. Setting deadlines and prioritizing decision-making are key.

Delegate When Possible: Sharing the burden of decision-making can lighten the mental load. Whether it’s splitting responsibilities with a partner or delegating tasks at work, collaboration can be a powerful tool.

Prioritize Quality Sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for cognitive function. Ensuring enough rest can significantly improve the ability to make decisions and reduce brain fog.

Embrace Continuous Improvement: Enhancing decision-making skills is a gradual process. Managing stress, practicing self-care, and being assertive can steadily improve resilience against decision fatigue.

Decision fatigue is a real and pervasive issue, but with conscious effort and practical strategies, it can be managed. As people navigate the complexities of modern life, recognizing and addressing this challenge is essential for maintaining mental well-being and making informed choices.
