The Mauritius “Post Office” stamps hold a fascinating place in philatelic history. Issued by the British Colony of Mauritius in September 1847, these stamps are renowned for their rarity and unique design. There are two denominations: an orange-red one penny (1d) and a deep blue two pence (2d). The wording on the stamps initially read “Post Office,” but it was later changed to “Post Paid.” Engraved by Joseph Osmond Barnard, these locally produced stamps exhibit a charmingly primitive character. Only 27 surviving examples exist, making them among the scarcest postage stamps globally. Collectors and enthusiasts cherish these tiny pieces of history, which continue to captivate imaginations and inspire awe in the world of philately.
