Kyle Larson on the differences between an IndyCar and NASCAR on the IMS oval

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson has spent a lot of time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this year.

That’s because two months ago, Larson raced in the Indy 500, getting to experience the Month of May for the first time as a driver.

He’s back at the famed oval again this weekend, competing in the Brickyard 400.

“It’s definitely cool for sure to be here,” Larson told News 8 Sports’ Andrew Chernoff. “And be back on the oval in a stock car’s a lot of fun.”

The Hendrick Motorsports driver had the sixth fastest speed during Friday’s opening Brickyard 400 practice. Larson’s fast lap was 180.774 mph. He’ll be hoping that translates to a good starting spot on Sunday, like he had for this May’s Indy 500.

He started the Indy 500 in fifth place after posting a four-lap average of 232.788 mph during qualifying.

“As far as driving the cars on the track, I think everybody would probably be surprised when I say the stock car feels way faster around here, because it’s got way less grip,” Larson said. “It’s way sketchier around here in the stock car than the IndyCar. I feel way more on edge in this thing than we did in May.”

Larson ultimately finished in 18th place in the Indy 500. But, his experience from May still has an impact on him.

“I’ve always had a great appreciation for this place (IMS), but I think living through the Indy 500, and just seeing all the tradition first-hand, and getting to do a lot of the stuff, being as a rookie, and all that, you definitely have a great perspective on things,” Larson said. “So, I enjoyed my time and, like I’ve said a lot, I just hope I get to do it again.”

Larson is one of four drivers to have won three races this NASCAR Cup Series season. He is currently second place in the standings.
