Indy releases snow season totals
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Winter is officially behind us, and it dropped more than 20 inches of snow on Indianapolis.
The Department of Public Works and it’s Indy Snow Force team announced on Wednesday they have wrapped up their 2014-2015 snow fighting season.
Indianapolis received 25.6 inches of snow for the season, which is just below the city’s average annual snowfall total of 25.9 inches.
Compared to last year, it was a somewhat tame winter. Indianapolis got 55.7 inches of snow in the winter of 2013-2014. It’s been dubbed the snowiest winter in Indy’s history.
The first snow of this season was on Halloween night. Indy received 0.1 inches of snow. It was the first measurable snow event in the city on Halloween since 1890, city officials said.
The first significant snow event of the season was on Nov. 16, 2014. Indy received 2.5 inches of snow then. Only 0.1 inches of snow fell during the month of December. Between January and February of 2015, 16.9 inches of snow fell. That’s before 8 inches of snow fell in less than 24 hours on March 1.
The city used about 38,500 tons of salt this season at a cost of $4.98 million, and Snow Force drivers logged more than 59,800 hours treating roads. The city spent about $7.9 million on snow removal for the season.
