TV robber arrested after car and foot chase
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A 22-year-old man is in jail after police said he stole a TV, led officers on a high speed chase, and knocked an innocent driver into a ditch.
Officers said they spotted the burglary suspect near 91st and College and tried to make a traffic stop, but the suspect took off speeding and drove through brush to get away.
An INDOT camera captured the end of the chase at 96th and Michigan, where the suspect slammed into a pickup truck. He then took off running and police caught him.
John Titus, who was inside the pickup, was not injured.
“He doesn’t need to be out,” Titus said of the suspect. “If he has no consideration for property or life then he needs to be off the street. I’m glad they caught him.”
Detectives said the suspect stole a TV after breaking into an apartment near 91st and College.
William Thomas, who lives in the apartment, said he came home during the break in.
“Just an incredible adrenaline rush right now,” Thomas said after the arrest.
Thomas said he got a good look at the suspect and the car, then backed out and called IMPD. He never confronted the suspect.
Police said they spotted the suspect because of Thomas’ description.
“I just tried to remain as calm as I could,” Thomas said. “I think IMPD did an incredible job. They stayed on it. I got my items. I’m extremely happy for that.”
Police praised Thomas for choosing not to confront the suspect.
“That’s what we ask our citizens to do,” IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams said. “Play good witnesses. Don’t try to play the police. Provide our officers with enough information.”
No one was hurt during the chase.
Police did not release the suspect’s name. He is facing charges of burglary, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident. Detectives said they also found a knife in the car he was driving.
