INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Marion County coroner on Tuesday identified the Subway sandwich shop employee shot and killed Monday night as a man in his 30s.

In separate emails to News 8, the coroner’s office provided different names and ages for the man: Ashoka Khumar, 36, and Ashok Kaumar, 35. By 4:50 p.m., the coroner had not responded to an email to confirm which name and age were correct. A receptionist at the coroner’s office declined to comment.

Friends and coworkers later identified him as Ashok Kumar, 35.

The Subway employee was involved in a fight with three suspects during a possible robbery while the restaurant was open, police said.

Medics and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to a robbery in progress at a business shortly after 7:45 p.m. at Subway, 7401 N. Shadeland Ave. That’s in the Shadeland Station Shopping Center south of 75th Street.

Sgt. Grace Sibley, an IMPD spokesperson, said, three people had entered the sandwich shop in an apparent robbery attempt. All three were dressed in black and carried black backpacks. Two of them wore black masks and the other wore a mask with a leopard print. At least one of the three was armed. It was not immediately clear how the three people left the shop.

Police on Monday night were not immediately certain whether anything was taken during the robbery attempt. A fight broke out inside the restaurant before the shooting, police believe.

Police would not say if anyone else was in the restaurant during the shooting.
