Man in custody after SWAT situation as police investigate Saturday shooting that left 4 dead

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man sought in connection to a quadruple homicide and a missing infant was taken into custody on Sunday evening, after an hourslong standoff.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department around 2 p.m. received a call with a lead in the investigation into the deaths of four people, including a child, found shot Saturday night in a home on Randolph Street, Officer Genae Cook said.

That tip led them to the 6200 block of Eastridge Drive — that’s near 10th and Arlington on the east side –where they tried for three to four hours to get Malik Halfacre, 25, to come out of a home. Police found the man in the attic of the home and he was not armed. He was taken to meet with detectives, according to Cook. Police on Sunday evening said the relationship between Malik Halfacre and the people who live in the home on Eastridge Drive was not clear.

Early Sunday morning, police said they were looking for Malik Halfacre, believed to be with 6-month-old Malia Halfacre, who was missing from the home on Randolph Street. An Amber Alert was issued for the girl, and she was found safe just after 5:30 a.m. But police continued to seek Malik Halfacre and said he was considered armed and dangerous.

Officers had been called around 8:15 p.m. Saturday to the intersection of East New York and North Randolph streets on a report of a person shot.

Police initially said a woman was found with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound and that the victim was in critical condition. She was taken to an area hospital, where she was stable. When talking to her, investigators learned that there may be other victims at another location, Officer Genae Cook said at the scene.

Officers went to the 300 block of North Randolph Street, based on the woman’s information. They went into a home there and found four people who were dead. One of those people was a young child, according to Officer Cook. It is not clear how old the other victims were.

Around 7 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the Sawmill Apartments on the city’s southeast side, where a woman had been found shot inside an apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following Saturday night’s deadly shootings, Mayor Hogsett released the following statement:

As a community, our hearts break for the victims and the families impacted by senseless violence last night. Although we are grateful for the safe location of two children, we mourn the loss of those whose lives were cut short by two separate instances of domestic disputes that turned deadly.

Over the last year, we’ve seen far too many tragedies occur when the proliferation of guns has collided with interpersonal conflict. These challenges are not just threats to our public safety, but the well-being of our community. I remain committed to locking arms with neighborhood and religious leaders to address these generational dilemmas.

I urge anyone who has information about last night’s events to come forward, so that we may bring those responsible to justice.
