Marion County mask mandate lifted for fully vaccinated people, some capacity restrictions loosened

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — For the first time in nearly a year, Hoosiers in Marion County can put away the mask.

The county’s mask mandate is now lifted for those who are fully vaccinated in most situations.

“It’s a long time coming, but I think we’re ready for it,” Bob Moreland, who is fully vaccinated, said.

For almost a year, since July of 2020, Hoosiers had to wear a mask in Marion County.

“I’m really excited that we finally get to get out again, if you’re fully vaccinated, and explore the city, go on runs,” Maureen Knaus, who is also fully vaccinated, said.

The Marion County Health Department told News 8 that businesses can still require masks at their establishments.

“I think it’s their right, I think they should. For the county guidelines, I think it’s a step in the right direction,” Jackson Sweeney, who is fully vaccinated, said.

A health department spokesperson told News 8 they’re relying on the honor system for people to go maskless.

“I hope people are honest. I’m sure there’s going to be a lot that aren’t. They’re just going to use it as an excuse not to wear a mask,” Moreland said.

Other people are less optimistic.

“Using the honor system, it’s not gonna work,” Austin Esotu, who is partially vaccinated, explained to News 8.

The new rules also mean some loosened restrictions.

Religious services and funerals can now be at 100% capacity. Indoor service in bars goes up to 75% capacity with 6 feet between parties. Fitness centers, dance studios and gyms can now be at 75% capacity.

“Yeah, that’s awesome, isn’t it?” Dan Mock, the owner of Eat the Frog Fitness studio on Massachusetts Avenue.

Mock says it means more options and opportunity for members.

“Our members are excited. We’re certainly excited to be back, 75% capacity is great. I can’t wait to get back to 100%,” Mock added.
