Construction worker finds Hammond man’s body in river

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) – Indiana officials say a construction worker found the body of a Hammond man floating in the Little Calumet River in East Chicago.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources say conservation officers are investigating the death of 60-year-old Daniel Auwerda. Officials with the agency say the construction worker found Auwerda’s body Wednesday afternoon near the Indiana Toll Road.

The body was about 60 feet from shore in about 3 1/2 feet of water.

Hammond police, Indiana conservation officers and the Lake County coroner are investigating. An autopsy is scheduled Thursday.
