Mastodon bones to be displayed at park’s new welcome center

GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) – Mastodon bones discovered at the site of a northern Indiana pond in the 1970s will be displayed at a park welcome center that’s expected to open this year.

The Elkhart Truth reports the city’s park board received 11 bones this week from Aggregate Industries, which had displayed them at its office next to Fidler Pond Park. The pieces include a molar and toe joints.

Aggregate Industries regional manager Randi Wille says the bones are estimated to be 50,000 to 1 million years old.

Fidler Pond Park is one of the city’s most popular parks. The welcome center is being created in a house found near the park’s entrance and will include reference materials to connect visitors with local attractions and history.
