6th grader may face criminal charges after bringing BB gun to school
GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — A sixth grader in Greenfield-Central Community Schools may face criminal charges for bringing a BB gun to school.
Police said Thursday that the 13-year-old goes to Maxwell Intermediate School. That’s in the unincorporated community of Maxwell, about 2 miles north of Greenfield off State Road 9.
The boy, who was not named because of his age, brought the weapon to school Wednesday.
Officers say no threats were made by the student.
The Hancock County prosecutor will consider criminal charges.

“Greenfield, IN. – Criminal charges are being considered against a 6th grade student at Maxwell Intermediate School after he brought a BB/pellet gun to school on Wednesday. The student showed a gun to another student and a teacher was informed.
“A Greenfield PD officer working as the School Resource Officer was called to investigate, alongside the Principal of the school. The student was removed from class immediately and searched by school staff. Located inside the students backpack was what appeared to be a black Glock 17 pistol along with a tan handgun magazine that contained five 9mm bullets.The magazine was inserted into the gun when it was located.
“Upon further inspection, this gun was determined to be a BB/pellet gun.
“The student, a 13 year old boy, is being disciplined by the school corporation. Due to his age, he will not be identified. No threats were made at any time by the student.
“A Probable Cause Affidavit has been sent to the Hancock County Prosecutors Office. If probable causes exists, theProsecutor will file proper charges with the court for a judge to review.
“The Greenfield Police Department and the Greenfield Central Community School Corporation take these matters very seriously. Parents and guardians should be having conversations with their children about the dangers of guns and other items that resemble guns. These items should never be taken to school. We thank the student that reported what they saw to a teacher. It takes courage to do the right thing,even though doing the right thing is sometimes hard.”
