Richardson to be Colts starting QB

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Rookie Anthony Richardson will be the Colts’ starting quarterback in the regular season.

Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen announced the move Tuesday morning at the team’s training camp at Grand Park in Westfield.

“The growth he’s shown and then obviously going into Buffalo and playing against a lot of their starters – he showed great signs of improvement,” Steichen said. “I like the things he did and it’s an opportunity for him now to get a lot more reps with the ones going forward and then we go from there.”

Steichen is “committed” to keeping Richardson as the starting QB for the entire season.

“Honestly, I was shocked. I’ve been grinding and putting in work just to get the title, but it’s not really all about the title,” Richardson said minutes after the public announcement. “I’m just trying to make sure I’m ready for the team.”

Richardson also told reporters he’s chasing ‘greatness’ and championships for the Colts.

“I want to be great, and I want to be remembered,” Richardson said. “I don’t want to just be one of those guys like, ‘Okay, he was in the league.’ I want my legacy to be remembered forever.”

Richardson started the team’s first preseason game against Buffalo. He finished 7 of 12 for 67 yards and an interception and two carries for 7 yards. Richardson was the fourth overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.

Richardson won the job of starter over veteran Gardner Minshew, who had previously been part of Steichen’s offense in Philadelphia.

Minshew completed all six of his pass attempts for 72 yards Saturday against Buffalo.
