INDOT, Holcomb announce application for funds for I-69 Ohio River Crossing project
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and the Indiana Department of Transportation announced Wednesday a bi-state effort between Indiana and Kentucky to apply for funds for the I-69 Ohio River Crossing project.
The $632.3 million in federal grant funding for the project would extend Interstate 69 from Evansville to Henderson, Kentucky, providing another gateway between the states.
“Construction of this crossing will extend I-69 from border-to-border in the State of Indiana, providing another gateway to and from Kentucky and points beyond,” Holcomb said in a release. “This project will have regional, national, and international impacts related to connectivity, safety, and economic opportunity on the corridor.”
INDOT and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet applied for the funds through the national Multimodal Discretionary Grant Program. Both states also proposed $513.7 million from other funding sources if the grant is approved.
The states have committed $265 million to complete environmental studies and construction of the Kentucky approach in Henderson, according to the release.
The $1.4 billion project is one of four infrastructure projects submitted for federal funding through the grant program. The other projects are dedicated to improving safety, reducing congestion, and making travel more efficient for select highways and interstates across Indiana.
