Armed robbery, stabbing reported at IUPUI parking garage
The suspect who stabbed an Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis student remained on the loose Thursday night, police said.
The stabbing happened before 8:20 a.m. Thursday on the campus at the Blackford Street Parking Garage, northwest of the intersection of West Michigan and North Blackford streets. Authorities have not released the name of the woman stabbed.
It was a terrifying wake-up call for students. The school issued a warning on Twitter; “If you are not on campus, stay away.”
Students also received a similar phone call from IUPUI.
“The voicemails that told us there was a 60-year old man that had robbed and stabbed an individual in our parking garage,” said IUPUI sophomore Johnny Chan.
IUPUI junior Brandon Yancey said, “I heard there was a stabbing and someone was robbed as well.”
“I’ll definitely be on my watch on my way home,” Yancey said.
The Blackford Street Parking Garage is a busy one located in the middle of campus. Investigators said they believe a man attacked a student, robbed her, then stabbed her in the arm and leg. Immediately, police began searching for the suspect.
“We started searching the service lots. Contacted IMPD (Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department) to seek their assistance and resources in checking those lots. Then we also checked some buildings in the area,” said IUPUI Police Department Deputy Chief Bill Abston.
The woman managed to drive herself to the hospital. She was in stable condition and expected to be released Thursday.
“Our concerns is somebody in our community was hurt and a crime occurred,” Abston said.
But, after searching, police have determined the man suspected in the stabbing is likely no longer on campus. The university again went to Twitter to advise students to be vigilant.
