Dogs rescued in Loogootee animal cruelty case ready for adoption

LOOGOOTEE, Ind. (WTWO) – Several of the dogs and puppies rescued in a Loogootee animal cruelty case are now ready for adoption.

Applications are being accepted for four of the puppies and 11 of the adult dogs, according to Martin County Humane Society volunteer Courtney Hughett.

“Some are still very shy and scared and we want to work with them more,” Hughett said of those not up for adoption yet.

The Humane Society took in 25 of 72 dogs found living in extreme conditions in Loogootee in late January. The owner of the animals, Julia K. Arney, is facing charges of animal cruelty and animal neglect.

Applications will be accepted until volunteers find well-suited families for each dog.

“We are receiving hundreds of applications, though, so this isn’t going to take long once we get time to sit down and go through them, “Hughett noted.

Hughett asked that the public refrain from visiting the shelter to see the dogs as it is a small facility unable to house large groups of people. Also, the volunteer-run facility is only open at limited days and times and will not be able to field phone inquiries regarding the dogs.

“People are going to have to be patient,” she said. “The care of the shelter dogs and cats come first, always.”

Those looking to adopt one of the rescued dogs or any of the other animals at the shelter should fill out an application here. If an applicant is found to be a suitable match, a volunteer will be in contact.

Other shelters that took in the rescued animals were: Buddy’s Promise/Tri State Yorkie and Small Breed Rescue in Evansville, the Owen County Humane Society and the Orange County Humane
Society.
