Feds: Delaware Co. lieutenant stole and sold department ammunition
DELAWARE, Ind. (WISH) — A now-retired lieutenant with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office stole and sold department ammunition, according to federal investigators.
Arlan Johnson was arrested on Thursday without incident, the FBI said. He also appeared in court on Thursday afternoon for his initial court appearance.
According to court documents, Johnson stole and then sold $8,580 in department-owned ammunition between 2012 and 2015.
On July 22, 2015, the DCSO performed an internal audit of ammunition within the department and discovered what was in storage was much less than what had been ordered.
Johnson was suspended that same day. He would retire on Sept. 18, 2015.
Court documents indicate Johnson had financial issues. He filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and his home was foreclosed on in 2014.
Investigators subpoenaed records from Hoosier Park Casino and found the following:
- Johnson had gambling losses of $38,574 in 2013
- Johnson had gambling losses of $38,629 in 2014
- Johnson had gambling losses of $26,521 through Sept. 1, 2015.
Investigators also found Johnson’s credit card balance between Jan. 2013 and July 2015 to be approximately $10,000. Credit union records showed he had received loans of approximately $12,935. With interest, his payments on those loans totaled approximately $22,537. Investigators said he also received advances on his tax returns.
Johnson has a preliminary hearing set for Mar. 3.
