Girl fatally stabbed on east side near Arsenal Tech; juvenile arrested
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis police on Monday said they found a girl fatally stabbed on the city’s east side near Arsenal Tech High School.
Indianapolis Public Schools identified the girl as Anabel Trujillo, an Arsenal Tech High School student.
“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those impacted by this tragic death. We will keep the safety and well-being of our students and staff our top priority,” IPS representative Marc Ransford said in a press release.
Police received reports of the stabbing around 9:13 a.m. in the 400 block of North Randolph Street. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said a neighbor called 911 after seeing the incident take place.
That block is in a neighborhood between East Michigan and East New York streets, just south of the high school.
Officers with the IMPD arrived and located the girl with stab wounds lying in the grass outside the home. She died at the scene.
“First and foremost, we want to be mindful of the victim and the victim’s family at this time. We also ask the community that they think about that victim now so that you do come forward with any information,” said Tommy Thompson, public information officer with IMPD.
Thompson said detectives were canvassing the area and speaking with witnesses to learn what led up to the stabbing.
IMPD has arrested a juvenile male for murder in connection to this investigation.
IPS Police and IMPD officers quickly located the suspect without incident on the high school’s property.
Thompson also asks the public to be mindful of the girl’s family following this tragedy and to “think about that victim.”
“We gotta work through our issues if we have these disturbances and we continue to resort to violence instead of walking away from the situation,” he said. “It comes on us as a society to do better. This family should never have to be going through this.”
IMPD asks anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers. “Justice is brought to the people, to the victims, we’ve had in the past because of community members coming forward,” Thompson said.
IPS placed Arsenal Technical High School, Theodore Potter School 74, and H. L. Harshman Middle School campuses on lockdown due to the investigation.
All students and staff were safe in the buildings.
Jose and Linda Vasquez have lived in the area for 45 years. They describe the situation as shocking.
“I don’t even know this little girl and just to even hear about it is heartbreaking. Me and my brother was just walking right passed the house and we didn’t even know anything that happened. I’m really at a loss for words and send my prayers out to the family,” Linda said.
They would like to see more efforts to prevent future tragedies.
“It first starts off with parenting and role modeling… let’s get these young kids off the streets,” Jose said.
