Historic downtown bar Elbow Room to close

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Operators of a downtown bar open since the end of Prohibition told their employees Wednesday that it will be closing.

Rick Lux, an owner of the the restaurant, said it will close after May 27. Lux Restaurants has owned the Elbow Room since 2002.

“It has been a great location for Lux Restaurants, but it was time to upgrade the restaurant or sell and we have ultimately decided it was time to reimagine the future of this location as the cultural landscape of downtown Indianapolis continues to evolve,” Lux said in a news release.

The bar is located at 605 N. Pennsylvania Street, near the American Legion Mall and the Minton-Capehart Federal Building. The triangular, Flatiron-style building is bordered by Pennsylvania Street and Fort Wayne Avenue.

Elbow Room employees will be placed at Lux’s other restaurants including Broad Ripple Tavern, Meridian, Blind Owl and Binkley’s in Indianapolis and Nickel Plate located in Fishers.

The property is owned by Lux and Matt Berg.

Prohibition was repealed by the 21st Amendment, which took effect Dec. 5, 1933, the day it was declared ratified.
