Howard Mudd buckles back in with Colts staff
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – “Me, coming back? No chance. I mean, for what?”
That sounds like a man in retirement. A man, well, that was retired.
Howard Mudd,77, certainly doesn’t need the work. But, the Colts revitalization project better known as the 2018 season helped change his mind.
First off, new Colts Offensive Line coach Chris Strausser and Mudd have been nearly inseparable the last few seasons at Washington University. Strassuer, the former Huskies assistant head coach, enlisted Mudd’s expertise four years ago. Mudd was living five miles from campus at the time and after a short while, agreed to help.
Fast forward to this offseason, Colts head coach Frank Reich was blown away by Strausser during an interview — and here comes the sales pitch for Mudd to come with: Bring yourself. Be you. Just like you were when Peyton Manning and the Colts star wars offense was protected by the league’s top pass blocking unit.
“He (Reich) said, would you consider coming here?… And I said, yes. I would like that, in fact, I will walk from Seattle but it will take me a while.”
“In fact, I am pretty stoked about this,” Mudd said.
A 77-year-old stoked about blocking, that is a story for the ages.
