Youth football coach shot in post-game fight at Cardinal Ritter High School, family says

No arrests in youth football game shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The coach of a youth football team was one of two men shot Saturday night when a fight broke out after a game at Cardinal Ritter High School.

Indy Firehawks coach Travon Smith was one of the men injured, his family confirmed to News 8’s Kyla Russell. He coached the 11-year-old team.

“I was really sick,” a family member said Sunday afternoon. “Honestly, I am disappointed that football, kids football, came to this … he doesn’t really hang around that type of crowd because he is focused on football and the kids.”

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to Cardinal Ritter High School on Indy’s west side around 10:18 p.m. to investigate a “shots fired” and “person shot” incident.

There, they learned a fight broke out between parents of opposing teams after the youth football game wrapped up and the Indy Firehawks won. At some point, someone fired a weapon, injuring Smith and one other man.

“They tried to attack one of our coaches, multiple of them,” one of the team’s coaches, Javell Davis, said.

Witnesses say a parent went to their car to get a gun and shot it, hitting the coach of the losing team and Smith.

“Unfortunately, one our coaches did get shot, and one of theirs did too,” Davis said.

The men were both rushed to Eskenazi Hospital for treatment. As of Saturday night, the men were listed in stable and critical conditions, but police did not specify Smith’s condition.

Smith’s family tells News 8 he received emergency surgery as soon as he arrived to the hospital Saturday night. He later stabilized, before he was sent in for another emergency surgery.

“Now he is having back to back surgeries,” Smith said. “So, we’re worried about him.”

The fight and shooting occurred on the outskirts of Ritter’s football field. No Ritter officials were involved.

Parents tell News 8 that Smith had been the coach of the traveling football team for three years. His son also plays for the Firehawks.

The parents also say Smith has a daughter, and he and his wife are expecting their third child.

On Sunday morning, the team took part in their pre-planned community day at the Clayton and LaSalle Park, where they practice.

“He’s been there for the past three years,” Indy Firehawks Dean Tabatha Hardiman said. “We’ve done so much that is on the field, as well as off of the field. My son really has taken a passion for football and Coach Smith has actually been the leader of that … Come on, man. We need you back on this field. Our boys they just want to know that he’s okay.”

His fellow coaches say Smith is the glue to their team.

“There’s five of us, we call ourselves the fab five,” Davis said. “That’s my brother, so a lot of business, a lot of traveling, a lot of behind the scenes meeting, so he means a lot to me.”

There were no updates to Smith’s condition as of Sunday night. Police have not made any arrests.
