Man wanted for holding woman captive, raping her has violent past

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — New details are emerging on the man accused of holding a woman hostage in his basement while her beat and raped her over several days.

This wasn’t 28-year old Maurice Nelson’s first run in with the law. More than three years ago, Nelson served jail time for a domestic violence case that left his then-girlfriend bloody, according to court documents.

The documents go on to say that Nelson punched his girlfriend in the face at least 10 times and kicked her multiple times in the stomach and ribs. The woman’s eye was swollen, and officers found her with blood on her face, and Nelson with swollen knuckles. The two had been fighting when Nelson attacked her, according to the documents.

A judge found Nelson guilty of a misdemeanor battery charge. He served four days of a one year sentence and was ordered to complete a 26-week domestic violence treatment program.

Online records show that Nelson was accused of nothing more than infractions until earlier this month.

In the most recent case, prosecutors believe Nelson held a woman, who he met on a telephone chat line, hostage in his basement over a four to five day period. During that time, he’s accused of beating her in the head and raping her multiple times.

Prosecutors set bond at a higher than normal amount at $250,000 and will require a GPS if Nelson posts bail, due to the severity of the accusations. However, Nelson is still on the run.
