INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — February is National Heart Health Month and heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.

Dr. Thomas Schleeter, a cardiologist with Acension St. Vincent, said the food we eat daily has a major impact on our hearts.

“Stick with the things on the outside of the grocery store instead of inside,” said Schleeter. “More of the fresh produce isle and to stay away from the processed foods.”

Another big way Schleeter said people can improve their hearts is by exercising regularly.

“You don’t have to do it all at once, even if that’s a minute or two less today, we can do a minute or two more tomorrow,” said Schleeter.
