Northeast snow storm halting flights across the country
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — More than 4,500 flights have been canceled across the country as of Friday morning.
At last check, 29 flights to or from Indianapolis have been canceled, according to Flightaware.com.
Most of those flights are going to or from the East Coast, where a massive storm is getting ready to hit.
Officials at Indianapolis International Airport said they don’t anticipate seeing many people stranded at the airport like on New Year’s Day, when people were here sleeping on mats. Airlines started canceling flights Thursday, so airport officials are hoping people got ahead of this storm and already made alternate plans.
Still, airport officials expect most, if not all, flights to the East Coast will be canceled. American Airlines has canceled all flights going to or from Charlotte on Friday and plans to cancel all flights in Philadelphia , DC and Baltimore Saturday. Those cancellations are going to cause ripple effects across the country, including Indianapolis.
Travelers say they’re trying to stay calm, as the weather ruins their plans.
“You know when you know you’re going on vacation and you hear you’re flight is canceled, you immediately go into sort of a panic mode,” said one traveler.
If you do have a flight scheduled, check directly with your airline for flight status update to avoid a trip out to the airport. Airport officials also ask travelers to download their airline’s app, so you can check your flight information instantly.
Some airlines are waving change fees or rebooking fees for travelers affected by the storm.
