Pence speaks at 1st solo appearance as VP candidate
ZIONSVILLE, Ind (WISH) — Indiana Gov. Mike Pence made his first appearance at home Saturday since being named Donald Trump’s running mate. He flew from New York to the Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville for a “welcome home” rally.
Hundreds of supporters greeted Pence. They cheered as Pence stepped out of the plane and took the stage.
“I’m totally body and soul in favor of Mike Pence and Don Trump to run this country,” said John Brill of Noblesville.
Brenda Atterhold of Indianapolis said, “I really am hopeful and really am hoping they both can get the office they deserve as president and vice president.”
He only spoke for about 10 minutes, but it was long enough to get his message across, “Donald Trump is a good man and he will make a great president of this nation.”
With his mom, wife Karen and daughter Charlotte by his side, Pence got emotional when thanking his three children.
“For your unflinching love and tireless efforts throughout your life to support Mom and Dad in all of their adventures — you make us so proud,” Pence said.
The governor gave credit to Hoosiers for this opportunity: “Your support and Indiana’s example has carried us to this moment. Our state is inspiring the nation, and I’m going to take Hoosier ideals to Washington D.C.”
Pence told the crowd that Saturday night would be pizza night at home. He and Trump are both set to speak in Cleveland at the Republican National Convention.
Trump announced Pence was his running mate on Friday. On Saturday morning, the two appeared at a joint event in New York.
