Richmond middle school students return following shooting

RICHMOND, Ind. (WISH) — Parents, teachers and school administrators lined the walkways leading to David W. Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond Monday.

They were there to show support for the students heading back to school after the shooting on Dec. 13. A few days ago, Richmond schools welcomed students and staff back to Dennis for family night to help them transition.

The school had therapy dogs on site and signs saying #DennisStrong. Therapy dogs and counselors will be available for students and staff throughout the week.

All of this is after 14-year-old Brandon Clegg shot his way into the building and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement before killing himself. Officials say prior knowledge of the potential attack helped save lives.

Police say the boy’s mother was the 911 caller who warned authorities before the teenager arrived at Dennis Middle school, allowing the school to be placed on lockdown.

Police said the preliminary autopsy results showed the teen died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Administrators tell WISH-TV the school is back to normal and the damage caused by the shooting is fixed.

From now on, all Richmond Community Schools will use the Raptor Visitor Management System.  This will require all visitors to present a state-issued license when entering school property.
