School on Wheels selects ‘Education Champion of the Year’

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It’s called the “Education Champion of the Year” and in 2018, it went to a person whose work is going way beyond academics.

Megan Thomas is a Social Worker at Cold Spring School in Indianapolis.

As the Education Champion Award winner, she was selected by the School on Wheels panel of judges

School on Wheels granted Thomas a $1,000 to use towards a project or program that will help their students.

She invested her award money into a sensory room.

It’s a room built to help kids with high energy and behavior issues work through their issues while getting them one-on-one attention.

This is her way of keeping them out of trouble and on track in the classroom.

Karen Routt, the School on Wheels Education Director, says the effort by Thomas to get this project off the ground deserved recognition.

“She has such passion and you talk with Megan for just a few minutes and you know right away that she cares so deeply for her kids,” Routt said.

Thomas was shocked, but grateful to get recogintion for her efforts.

“You don’t expect to win an award for something that is your job and you just love to do,” she said

Nominations for the 2019 Education Champion are open right now through Feb. 17th. The award is open to any educator in the state of Indiana.
