Small fire on the roof of Purdue Memorial Union
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Around 10:30 a.m. Monday, Purdue firefighters responded to a small fire on the roof of the Purdue Memorial Union.
Purdue Fire Chief Kevin Ply said workers were soldering together copper gutters on the roof when some wood caught fire. The workers poured water on the fire and put it out, but it was still smoking.
That’s when Union Employees smelled the smoke and called the Purdue University Fire Department. Employees pulled the fire alarm and evacuated the building.
Purdue firefighters got on the roof and used a fire extinguisher to finish the job.
The situation was under control around noon, and people were allowed back inside the building shortly after the incident.
There is minor damage to the roof of the northwest corner of the building.
