Tax hikes removed from road funding bill

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Say goodbye to the tax hikes that were proposed in the Indiana General Assembly.

A state Senate committee gave unanimous approval Thursday to an amendment on a road funding bill that eliminates those increases.

The Indiana House earlier approved hikes in the gas tax and the cigarette to create an ongoing source for road money.

“I just couldn’t get comfortable with that,” said Committee Chairman Luke Kenley (R-Noblesville,) “and so I think we’re gonna have to keep working on that until we can all come up with a solution.”

“We never thought we would get it all done in one, in one fell swoop,” said bill author Rep. Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso.)

House Speaker Brian Bosma led the effort to create the tax hikes.
