Texas Tech police officer shot, killed; suspect apprehended
LUBBOCK, Texas (KLBK/KXAN) – A Texas Tech police officer has been shot and killed, and the suspect apprehended, after the campus was on lockdown Monday night.
According to 24-Hour News 8’s sister station KLBK, police were called at 7:50 p.m. Central time to the TTPD building in Lubbock.
The university tweeted that the shooter was at large and the campus was on lockdown around 8:23 p.m.
Texas Tech police say early in the evening they made a student welfare check. After entering the room, police said they found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Officers say they then brought the suspect to their station, where the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head, killing the officer. The suspect then ran away.
Gov. Greg Abbott said he spoke with the university’s chancellor and mobilized all Lubbock-area Department of Public Safety troopers to help police search for the suspect.
Texas Tech issued the following statement following the shooting:
Earlier this evening, Texas Tech Police made a student welfare check. Upon entering the room, officers found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Officers brought the suspect to the police station for standard debriefing. During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head. The officer is deceased. The suspect fled on foot and is currently still at-large. Texas Tech University campus is on lockdown.”
Texas Tech tweeted that the campus remained on lockdown and the suspect at large as of 9:20 p.m.
In a statement, the university identified the suspected shooter as 19-year-old Hollis Daniels.
At approximately 9:34 p.m., Texas Tech announced via Twitter that Daniels had been apprehended and lifted the campus lockdown.
