What’s next for local ITT students?

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – Former ITT Technical Institute students are scrambling for ways to earn their degrees after company leaders announced Tuesday they’re permanently closing their schools.

The move affects 35,000 students and 8,000 employees across the country.

In central Indiana: 300 full-time ITT Tech. workers are out of a job and 85 part-timers, according to Employ Indy.

A national webinar for ITT students will address their questions and concerns on Wednesday.

David Anthony studied drafting and design at ITT for a year and a half.

“I’m stressed. Depressed. I’m a lot of things right now,” Anthony said.

He drove to the Shadeland Avenue ITT campus looking for answers. Instead, he found a locked door and a dark, empty room.

“Right now, I just feel like they left us hanging out to dry,” he said.

Company leaders said Tuesday that ITT is focused on helping students move forward. Both the company’s Indianapolis campuses, however, were closed all day.

ITT told students about the decision in an email Tuesday morning.

“My word to ITT is, out of fairness, at least you can call us students and contact us-not by email-and let us know. Where do we go from here?” Anthony said.

U.S. Secretary of Education John King released a statement saying some ITT students can have their federal loan debt wiped away. He’s directing students to a Department of Education webpage aimed at helping former ITT students.

King also said some students can transfer credits to other schools.

Anthony said he called one school and an employee told him they won’t take his credits.

“I came too far to not complete it,” Anthony said. “I’m just hoping I don’t have to start over from the beginning.”

ITT Tech. has been the subject of government probes for years over recruitment tactics, lending practices and job placement figures.

The company’s accrediting agency said in April that ITT wasn’t complying with accrediting standards.

Last month, the D.O.E. banned ITT from enrolling students who use federal aid.

Anthony said he’s blindsided by the move. He would have graduated from ITT in about one year.

“It’s a pretty hurtful situation we’re in right now,” he said. “I’m sure there’s a lot of upset people.”

ITT declined a request for an interview with 24-Hour News 8.
