Colts release QB Ryan, trade CB Gilmore to Cowboys
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Colts are releasing quarterback Matt Ryan, News 8’s Anthony Calhoun reports.
His Colts career ends with 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 games, The Athletic reports.
News 8’s Colts Insider Zak Keefer of The Athletic tweeted, “This was inevitable after last season. Matt was a total pro in Indy — deeply respected by teammates.”
Also on Tuesday, cornerback Stephon Gilmore is being traded to the Dallas Cowboys, Keefer reported.
Keefer tweets Ryan’s release and Gilmore’s trade will free up roughly $25 million in cap space.
Cornerback, though, remains a position where the Colts need to add at, he says.
Gilmore had a good 2022 season, with 16 starts and two interceptions. He also clinched two Colts wins with pass breakups, Keefer says.
Keefer outlined the Colts’ moves to date: re-sign DE Tyquan Lewis and LB EJ Speed; sign K Matt Gay; LB Bobby Okereke signs with New York Giants; CB Brandon Facyson signs with Las Vegas Raiders; trade CB Stephon Gilmore, saves $9.9 million; and releases QB Matt Ryan, saves $17 million.
