High heat index this weekend and what it means
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)–Another wave of 90s will impact central Indiana this weekend. It’s going to be hot and also humid too.
As of Friday afternoon there is no heat advisory in effect for central Indiana. However counties in the northwestern part of the state and most of Illinois are under a heat advisory for Saturday afternoon.
In order to have a heat advisory issued, heat index values need to be at or above 105 for several hours. It looks like Indianapolis will get close but not exceed 105. Heat index or feels like temperatures will be close to the triple digits on Saturday and between 99-104 on Sunday.
So what is the heat index? It’s a combination of heat and humidity. The body sweats to cool itself. If the sweat doesn’t evaporate, which is a cooling process, the body stays warm. We feel warmer when it’s hot and humid.
This weekend make sure you stay safe if you’re outdoors. Wear sunscreen, drink water, take frequent breaks, find shade when you can and get some relief in the air conditioning.
