Man who drove shooting victim to CCB sentenced in 2015 case

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis man has been sentenced to more than 60 years in prison after he shot a woman and then drove her to the City-County Building.

William Smith received 62 years in the Indiana Department of Correction for the murder of Azya Knowles. Smith was found guilty in February.

Smith was stopped by an officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department on Feb. 11, 2015. The officer found Smith holding a gun near the City-County Building.

Inside of Smith’s vehicle was the 20-year-old Knowles. She had been shot in the head three times. She was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital where she later died.

Smith had told police that he and Knowles had been shot at, but couldn’t provide information on who shot at them. Police found three bullet casings and almost $30,000 in cash inside of Smith’s vehicle, leading to Smith being charged with murder.

In addition to murder, Smith was also found guilty of possession of a handgun without a license and possession of marijuana.
