Tips to get your child off to a good start in preschool

The big day for your little one (and for mom and dad) is finally here! Preschool has officially begun! Deborah Stewart, Early Childhood Educator & Author of Teach Preschool Blog, has a few tips to make the first few weeks, or even months, a success!Five Tips to help your child get off to a good start in preschool:

Tip 1. Go to bed early – A good night’s sleep is a must do for success at school. Children who get the proper amount of rest/sleep do better emotionally, socially, academically in school.

Tip 2. Get up early before school so the morning is relaxed and not rushed and eat a good breakfast – choose “thinking food” not “junk food”.

Tip 3. Keep your own emotions in check – young children pick up on your stress or emotions and will emulate them.

Tip 4. Use the car ride to preschool as a time to talk or sing with your child (turn off the phone, videos, etc…)

Tip 5. To help young children get the most out of their preschool experience be sure to help them dress for success!

– Send them in clothing that they can take on and off all by themselves as much as possible.

– Choose clothing that they won’t be worried about getting messy.

– Choose clothing that will be appropriate for weather conditions.

– Choose clothing that is good for outdoor play, running, and other forms of big movement.

– Don’t forget to wear good shoes so little feet don’t get hurt if stepped on.

ABOUT DEBORAH STEWART:

I graduated with honors with an associate degree in early childhood education, a bachelor degree in human services and management, and a master degree in early childhood education. I am an avid believer in life-long learning and do my very best to practice this through ongoing education, research, and study. My Preschool I have my own part-time private preschool called “The Children’s Studio” located in a small town in Indiana. The studio is also my own private lab school. It is the classroom where I apply the skills and knowledge I have gained over the years as well as where I observe early learning in action. My students range from ages three to five and come to my preschool two to three days a week. My teaching assistant and I observe the children as they play and learn and photograph their learning in action to share with you on my Teach Preschool blog.

My Book I am also the author of the book “Ready for Kindergarten” which is available on Amazon. My Passion I am a teacher who is always learning and growing so as you read my blog, you will see that I am also always changing my approach towards teaching based upon what I believe my students need from me and what I am currently learning about best practices in early childhood education. I believe the best learning takes place through meaningful play and exploration so I fill my small classroom environment with opportunities for the children to explore new and interesting processes and materials every single day.
