South African Krugerrand found in Salvation Army red kettle
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Salvation Army bell ringer got a surprise in a red kettle Wednesday.
While counting the donations from the Monday kettles, he came across a strange coin. Upon further inspection, workers realized it was a South African Krugerrand. The solid-gold coin is worth about $1,200.
This is a first for Salvation Army Lieutenant Steve Dahl, but he said it’s just another example of the generosity of people in Greater Lafayette.
“I think it’s awesome, you know. I mean, obviously, somebody went to the effort of collecting this and holding onto this,” Dahl said. “They thought that we are a worthy cause to support with it. It’s very humbling actually.”
Dahl said people never cease to amaze him when it comes to giving.
“We live in a very generous community – the Greater Lafayette area. It’s just amazing to me. They always come through and support those who are in need in their community,” Dahl said.
The kettle came from the Walmart on Lafayette’s east side. The donor is unknown.
