IMPD: 1 dead after self-defense shooting on west side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One person has died following a shooting on the city’s west side.

It happened on Michigan street near Holt Road just before 6:30 p.m Sunday.

Police say a man became unruly at a Mother’s Day gathering at the apartment complex, which lead to the shooting.

After arriving on scene, officers found an unresponsive man laying in the parking lot suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.  However, the man, 31-year-old Keith Banks, died from his injuries.

Officers also responded to the 70 block of North Lynnhurst after a caller indicated that he was the shooter. The man was detained and taken to IMPD Headquarters for questioning.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that a number of people had gathered for a party. Police say a man was driving erratically near children, he then left and came back and threatened to shoot people after learning that someone had called the police.

It was at that time that the man who was taken in for questioning, who does have a valid handgun permit, pulled out a gun and shot the other man several times.
