Senator Elizabeth Warren wants investigation into Trump presidential transition
WASHINGTON (WWLP) – Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is calling for the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate what she says are conflicts of interest in the presidential transition process. Warren, along with fellow Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings, sent a letter Wednesday to Comptroller General Gene Dodaro asking for the examination of President-Elect Donald Trump’s transition.
In the letter, the Democrats contend that Trump has so far failed to set up a qualified blind trust for his business holdings. They also fault him for billing the Secret Service $1.6 million for flights, when the president-elect has been traveling on a plane that he himself owns. They also raise questions about a phone call between Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull that was reportedly received on the president-elect’s personal cell phone, as well as meetings with business partners.
“At this point, it is not clear if the line between Mr. Trump’s presidency and his business ventures is blurred- or entirely nonexistent,” the letter reads.
On Monday, Trump responded to questions about his business meetings on Twitter. Writing: “Prior to the election it was well known that I have interest in properties all over the world. Only the crooked media makes this a big deal!”
Warren and Cummings say that because the presidential transition will only be going on until Trump’s inauguration on January 20, they want the GAO to take quick action on their questions.Click here to read the letter.
