Butler men’s basketball team wear patch to honor Andrew Smith

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Butler Bulldogs will carry a little piece of their former center with them for the rest of the season.

The Butler men’s basketball team will wear a patch on their jersey for the remainder of the season.

Each jersey now has a small black patch that reads “AS44.” Smith, or affectionately called Moose by the Butler community, died Tuesday after a two-year battle with cancer.

According to Butler Athletics, the patch or jerseys won’t be available for purchase, but t-shirts from the Stay Positive game on Saturday will be sold. All proceeds will go to the Smith family.

The jerseys will be worn Saturday for the first time when Butler takes on St. John’s. According to Butler Athletics, a tribute video and moment of silence are also planned.
