Semi accident kills Ohio woman

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — According to Indiana State Police, a woman from Ohio was killed on Friday night in an accident that shutdown the I-70 West and I-65 South split for four hours.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene, where Tanya Mitchell, 45, Of Toronto, OH., was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County Coroner’s office.

The call came in just before 10:30 p.m. and crews were on the scene minutes later.

The incident occurred near the I-70/I-65 south connector in the area commonly called the spaghetti bowl.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, a semi carrying paper products, hit a support beam on the interstate and then burst into flames.

That semi was being driven by Herbert Oien, 50, or McMinnville, OR.

Oien was able to successfully exit out of the vehicle.

Mitchell was unable to get out despite the help of two motorists who stopped to help.

The intense heat from the fire made any rescue attempts ultimately unsuccessful.

Crews spent nearly an hour getting the fire under control.

Oien was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in good condition to be checked for injuries.
