IMPD: Officer fired weapon after confronted by armed suspect
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis police say no one was hurt Thursday morning when an officer fired shots at an armed suspect inside a northwest side apartment building.
At around 4:30 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance at the George Apartment Homes, located in the 5600 block of Sebring Drive. That’s just south of the intersection of 59th Street and Georgetown Road, north of Snacks.
Officers were confronted in the hallway of an apartment building by Dametry Cortez, 30, leading at least one IMPD officer to fire their service weapon, according to IMPD Public Information Officer Samone Burris.
“Officers were able to take that subject immediately into custody and there has been no additional threat to the public,” Burris said. “Preliminarily, he will be facing some charges.”
Cortez and the woman involved in the domestic disturbance that prompted the 911 call were previously in a relationship, according to Burris.
“Preliminary information leads us to believe that the two individuals involved were known to each other. They were ex-boyfriend and ex-girlfriend. This is a domestic violence incident. The victim that was involved in this incident is safe and has been provided with additional resources through our victims’ assistance advocates.”
Burris says no one was hurt when the officer fired his service weapon.
“It is safe to say the officers did not hurt anyone,” Burris said. “No officers, no community members, or residents were injured during this incident.”
The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave. Burris declined to share the officer’s name, age, or experience with the department.
Police urge anyone involved in an incident of domestic violence, or who is living in a home that is not safe, to contact the IMPD victim assistance unit online or by calling 317-327-3311 or call the Indy Champions for Domestic Violence Prevention at 317-210-0866.
