2 firefighters hurt in east side arson fire
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A fire on the east side of Indianapolis Wednesday night that injured two firefighters was intentionally set, officials said.
It happened just south of the intersection of 42nd Street and Post Road.
Neighbors told investigators they heard a loud bang before the fire at the abandoned apartment complex. They say people living in the building without permission have been a problem in the past.
When firefighters arrived at the Oak Tree Apartments they saw flames and heavy smoke pouring out of the building. Crews worked to put the fire out but before they were finished the rear part of the building collapsed.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries – an Indianapolis firefighter strained his shoulder and was taken to the hospital and a Lawrence firefighter cut his hand and was treated at the scene, then released.
The fire destroyed the building and officials say the building is a total loss.
IMPD and IFD fire investigators have ruled the fire as arson. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477(TIPS).
