Families of murdered Delphi teens announce plans for fundraiser, memorial park
CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — The families of two girls found murdered in Delphi announced plans Thursday evening to build a softball field and park to honor their memories.
Abby Williams, 13, and 14-year-old Libby German were reported missing on Feb. 13. The girls had gone hiking and did not show up for pick up. Search volunteers discovered the girls’ bodies near the Delphi Historic Trail on Feb. 14.
Since then police have received thousands of tips related to the case. However, an arrest has yet to be made.
A fundraiser is taking place in July at the Dusty Trail Saloon in Kokomo to help raise money to build the softball field and park.
Family told 24-Hour News 8 this will be special place to remember the girls and to give back to the community.
Anna Williams and Becky and Mike Patty sat together in front of the media for the first time.
“I’ve been grateful for the companionship of Mike and Becky and our love for both of the girls because it could have been easy just to keep that to ourselves,” said Williams, Abby’s mother.
The murders of Abby and Libby remain unsolved more than two months after the girls went missing. Investigators released a picture of the suspect and audio clip– both taken from Libby’s phone.
Williams said she’s not giving hope in the search for the person responsible. She knows everyone is frustrated but knows investigators will find whoever killed the girls.
“Today’s the day every day,” Williams said. “Every day we wake up today is the day and God got this. They believe it, we believe it.”
The two families are forever bonded by a tragedy that has captured the attention of people across the country.
“We definitely grieve together and share happy moments together, and that’s how we’re going to be,” said Williams. “We’re a family now. Like it or not we’re a family now.”
But grieving together also means finding the strength to heal together. They want to build a softball field and park and incorporate elements of art and music to honor the girls.
“It’s all together — they were all of those things together that made those girls so very special to us,” said Williams.
Both families hope a summer fundraiser will help them reach their goal.
“You can’t bring those girls back, but we can sure make sure they’re going to be remembered and we’re working very hard to make sure that we give back to the community, and those girls are going to be remembered when we’re long gone,” said Becky Patty, Libby’s grandmother.
The fundraiser is called The Abby and Libby Field of Dreams Memorial Show. A rock band called Saving Abel will also be putting on a concert.
People can also participate in a motorcycle ride and silent auction. Registration opens at 11 a.m. and kick stands up at 1 p.m.
